Blytheville Crane and Rigging Exam Prep for Steel Country

Blytheville is where Arkansas steel got serious. Nucor-Yamato Steel has rolled structural shapes here since 1987, and Nucor Steel Arkansas makes sheet on the same side of town. Mississippi County as a whole is often cited as the largest steel-producing county in the country by volume. Add an 11,600-foot runway at the former Eaker Air Force Base and the result is a town where cranes, rigging and big equipment are part of daily life. Arkansas Online Crane School offers Blytheville operators, riggers and signal persons self-paced online study for accredited certification written exams.

Inside and around the mills

Nucor-Yamato produces wide-flange beams, H-piling and sheet piling, and one profile calls it the largest structural mill in the Western Hemisphere. Nucor's Blytheville operations have expanded more than once, including a $230 million project reported in 2016. Steelmaking uses overhead and ladle cranes inside the melt shop under general industry rules, but every expansion, furnace rebuild, baghouse replacement and new rolling stand brings in construction cranes, often large crawlers and hydraulics working in congested, hot, dusty areas.

Contract crews on mill outages face compressed schedules, heavy and oddly shaped components, and lifts over or near energized equipment. Rigging for those jobs leans on engineered lifting lugs, spreader bars, chain falls and tuggers as well as cranes. A qualified rigger who can read a lift plan, check a rigging hardware tag and spot a damaged sling is worth a lot on a shutdown.

The Aeroplex and the old Eaker base

Eaker Air Force Base closed in December 1992, and the property became the Arkansas International Airport and the Arkansas Aeroplex industrial park, owned by the Blytheville-Gosnell Regional Airport Authority. Aviation Repair Technologies set up there in 2008 for heavy aircraft maintenance, storage and disassembly, using large hangars and ramp space. Military aircraft from Little Rock Air Force Base and Guard units also train at the field.

Aircraft disassembly and engine work involve lifting heavy, expensive components in hangars with limited headroom. That is often done with specialized equipment rather than a construction crane, but the rigging principles are the same: know the weight, find the center of gravity, protect the load and control it all the way down.

Delta soils, flat wind and the New Madrid zone

The land around Blytheville is pancake-flat cotton and soybean country with nothing to break the wind, so gusts arrive at full strength across open sites. The soils are river deposits that turn soft when wet, and the area sits within the New Madrid seismic zone. Mill and plant expansions here are designed with heavy foundations for good reason, and crane setups on new fill need verified support.

What we would study first in Blytheville

For contract operators chasing mill expansions, the mobile crane operator course covers the core exam and the lattice and telescopic specialties. Riggers on outages should look at Rigger Level 2, and anyone on the radio during blind picks should consider the signal person course. Operators already certified can use our recertification course before their five-year renewal.

Arkansas does not license crane operators at the state level. Federal OSHA standards apply to private employers, as explained in our requirements guide.

Questions people ask

Do mill overhead crane operators need NCCCO certification?

The construction crane rule in 1926.1427 covers construction work. Operating overhead cranes inside a mill is under general industry rules, and employers set their own standards. We don't speak for Nucor or any other employer, so ask your supervisor.

How far is the drive to a bigger testing market?

Memphis is roughly 70 miles south on I-55 and Jonesboro is about an hour west. Written exams can also be taken online through proctored testing, while practical exams are arranged through the certifying body.

Can contract companies enroll a whole outage crew?

Yes. Crew enrollment is available through the enrollment form, and each worker studies on their own device.

I have 1,000 hours of crane time. Does that matter for recertification?

For NCCCO operators, documented crane-related experience of 1,000 hours within the certification period can waive the recertification practical exam. You still take the written recert exam.
