Benton County Crane Certification for a Region That Keeps Building
Few places in Arkansas put up as much steel, concrete and timber as Benton County. Walmart's headquarters campus, highway interchanges and bypasses, warehouses, apartments and new schools have kept cranes working along the I-49 corridor for years. That volume also means general contractors and crane rental companies need a steady pipeline of certified operators, qualified riggers and signal persons. Our self-paced online courses help you prepare for the nationally accredited exams on your own schedule, on any device.
Walmart's Home Office and the mass-timber shift
Walmart's new headquarters in Bentonville covers about 350 acres. The company called it a multibillion-dollar investment, built with mass timber and smart-building systems, and opened it in phases during 2025, with the last street-front shops and restaurants due in 2026; Sam Walton Hall alone is a 200,000-square-foot, two-story auditorium. Demolition and utility work started in 2019, and the job ran for years.
Mass timber changes how a crane crew works. Glulam beams and cross-laminated timber panels are big, relatively light and easy to damage, so rigging uses softer slings, spreader bars and careful attention to center of gravity, while signal persons guide panels into tight connections. Local TV also reported a crane collapse on a construction site at the headquarters, with no injuries reported and Walmart saying it was following up with contractors on safety. It is a reminder of why the federal rule insists on certified operators and qualified riggers. We don't speak for Walmart or its contractors.
Roads, bridges and the interchange workload
At an April 2025 Bentonville chamber briefing, ARDOT's District 9 engineer said about $1.5 billion in highway work over a decade had been completed, was underway or was about to start in Benton County, with $273 million under construction across 24 projects and roughly $478 million more coming. Regional jobs include the Springdale Northern Bypass, a four-phase project of more than 21 miles, and a roughly 4-mile connector to Northwest Arkansas National Airport built by Crossland Construction for $127.7 million. Originally estimated for 2027, the connector opened to traffic in September 2026 along with the bypass segment it ties into.
Highway work brings girder setting, bridge beam picks with two cranes, precast box culverts and sign structures. Tandem lifts and lifts near traffic need a written plan, a qualified rigger and a signal person who can keep the operator informed when the load is out of view.

- Precast and culvert setting: mobile crane operator
- Anyone directing a blind pick: signal person
Vertical growth and tower cranes
As projects in Bentonville and Rogers get taller and denser, some general contractors choose a tower crane over repeated mobile setups. Tower crane operators work from a fixed cab high above a congested site, often blind to the hook, so they depend on radio signals and a disciplined communication routine. If you are moving from mobile cranes to towers, the tower crane operator course covers the knowledge side of that exam.
Ozark weather on a busy site
Benton County sits on the Ozark Plateau, so expect hills, rocky ground and limestone close to the surface. Spring brings strong storm lines and tornado warnings, summers are hot and humid, and winter ice storms can stop work for days. Anemometer readings, gust limits from the manufacturer and a clear stop-work trigger belong in every lift plan, especially when you are flying large panels or curtain-wall units.
Extended rain also softens backfill around new foundations. Check ground conditions and use mats under outriggers, because the controlling entity is responsible for ground preparation under the federal rule, but the operator is the one who has to refuse a bad setup.
Certification and where testing happens
Arkansas has no state crane operator license, and no city license was found in Bentonville or Rogers. Private employers are covered by federal OSHA through the Little Rock Area Office. For construction, 29 CFR 1926.1427 requires certification from an accredited testing organization plus an employer evaluation; signal persons and riggers must be qualified. See our Arkansas requirements guide.
Written exams can be completed by Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at a scheduled event. The practical exam is a hands-on test at an accredited practical site arranged through the certifying body. Tulsa and Springfield, Missouri, are each a couple of hours away, and Little Rock is about three and a half hours.
Questions people ask
Do I need a city license to run a crane in Bentonville or Rogers?
We found no city crane operator license in either city, and Arkansas has no state license. Federal certification and employer evaluation are what apply, though a contract or owner can set extra requirements.
Which course is best for mass-timber erection?
Pair the mobile crane operator or tower crane operator course with Rigger Level 2, since panel and beam rigging is where most of the challenge lies.
Can a general contractor enroll a whole crew?
Yes. Crew enrollment is available, and an enrollment advisor follows up through the form on our get started page.
Does this page cover Lowell, Pea Ridge, Centerton and Gravette?
Yes. It serves all of Benton County. Rogers, Bentonville, Bella Vista and Siloam Springs also have their own pages.
