Crane Certification Study for Bentonville Builders
Few towns of Bentonville's size have seen as much construction in a decade. Walmart's new 350-acre Home Office campus, built largely from mass timber, opened in phases starting January 2025, and the airport west of town has approved its next big terminal project. Around those anchors, offices for suppliers, hotels, apartments and museums keep the crane count high. Arkansas Online Crane School offers online, self-paced preparation for the written exams of accredited crane certifications, so Bentonville crews can study whenever the schedule allows.
Mass timber changed the lifting
Walmart's campus construction began in 2019, went vertical through 2023 and opened with a celebration in January 2025, followed by phased move-ins and street-front retail later that year. Its 12 office buildings, fitness center, childcare center, food hall, hotel and conference hall were built largely with mass timber.
Setting glulam columns and cross-laminated timber panels is precise work. Panels are large and light for their size, which makes them sensitive to wind; they are often picked with engineered lifting hardware screwed into the wood and must be landed within tight tolerances. Crews who did that work learned tag line control, slow controlled swings and close coordination between operator and signal person. Those skills transfer well to any project in town with large, flat, wind-catching loads, from precast walls to rooftop solar racks.
XNA and the airport corridor
Northwest Arkansas National Airport sits west of Bentonville in Highfill. In August 2026 its board approved a bid of about $78.8 million from CDI Contractors for a two-level, roughly 111,000-square-foot western concourse expansion, with a net gain of five gates. Reported timelines had construction starting around November 2026, with estimates for completion ranging from about two years to spring 2029. The airport has also discussed a consolidated rental car and parking structure.
Airport work adds a layer of rules most crane crews don't see elsewhere: FAA airspace review for tall equipment, boom height limits near runways, lighting or flagging of the boom, and coordination with airport operations before a crane goes up.
Picking a starting point
Bentonville jobs run from homebuilders setting trusses with a knuckle boom to general contractors with tower cranes on multi-story offices. Choose the course that matches the machine you run now and the one you want to run next.
- Large hydraulic or crawler cranes on campus-style projects: mobile crane operator
- Multi-story offices and hotels downtown: tower crane operator
- Engineered timber or precast picks: Rigger Level II and signal person
- Five-year renewal coming up: mobile crane recertification
What Arkansas requires
Bentonville has no city crane license that we could find, and Arkansas issues no state license. Private-sector employers fall under federal OSHA, through its Little Rock Area Office, and must use operators certified by an accredited testing organization and evaluated by the employer. Signal persons and riggers must be qualified. Our requirements guide has the details.
Written exams go through the certifying body by Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at a scheduled event. The practical exam happens on an actual crane at an accredited practical test site. Tulsa and Springfield, Missouri, are each about two hours away by highway.
Questions people ask
Do I need special certification to set mass timber?
There is no separate mass timber certification under federal rules. Operators need accredited crane certification, and riggers and signal persons must be qualified. Project specifications may add their own training requirements.
I'm certified already. How does recertification work?
NCCCO certifications run five years. Operators with 1,000 hours of crane-related experience can have the recertification practical waived. Our recertification course helps you prepare for the written exam.
Does Walmart require this course?
No, and we don't speak for Walmart or any contractor. The course prepares you for accredited certification exams.
