Magnolia Crane Operator and Rigger Exam Prep

Magnolia is a college town with two of the world's largest bromine plants on its edge. Albemarle's operations here, a $540 million expansion announced in 2022 and a lithium-from-brine project taking shape west of town add up to a lot of steel, vessels and piping that has to be lifted into place. If you want to be on those crews, or move from helper to operator, our online course prepares you for the written certification exams without taking you off the job.

Why Magnolia needs more qualified lifting crews

Albemarle has said its two Magnolia plants employ more than 400 of its own people plus about 200 contractors, making it the largest corporate employer in Columbia County. When the company announced its up-to-$540 million expansion of both plants in November 2022, with work planned through 2027, it projected around 250 construction jobs. Construction work inside an operating chemical plant is lift-heavy: new reactors and tanks, pipe rack modules, structural steel, electrical gear. Each of those picks needs a certified operator, qualified riggers and someone signaling who knows the hand signals cold.

The second driver is lithium. The South West Arkansas Project, originally announced by Standard Lithium and now promoted under the Smackover Lithium name, is located roughly 15 miles west of Magnolia. Its 2023 preliminary feasibility study described a resource meant to support at least 20 years of operation, and the company has since reported approval from the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission for a Phase I brine production unit. The partners awarded the main construction contracts in May 2026 but had not announced a final investment decision as of September 2026. If that project moves into full construction, the demand for lifting crews in this corner of the state goes up again.

Steady work outside the chemical plants

Not every Magnolia lift is in a process unit. The local manufacturing base has included aluminum extrusion, Amfuel's military aircraft fuel cells and timber operations such as Weyerhaeuser and Deltic. Sawmills, chip yards and log decks use knuckle-boom loaders and truck-mounted cranes daily, and building-supply dealers set trusses and block on residential lots around town. Those jobs line up well with the articulating crane and service truck crane courses.

A note for SAU students and recent grads

Southern Arkansas University has more than 200 students in engineering, and its leadership has said industry partners want graduates who stay in the area. Engineers who plan lifts, review rigging plans or supervise contractors on plant projects benefit from understanding what certified operators and riggers are tested on. Some take the Rigger Level 1 or signal person course simply to speak the same language as the crew. The course is self-paced, so it fits around a class schedule.

Certification facts for Columbia County

Arkansas has no crane license of its own. Private-sector crane work here falls under federal OSHA, handled by the Little Rock Area Office, and the controlling rule is 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC. That rule requires operators to hold certification from an accredited testing organization and to be evaluated by their employer, and it requires qualified signal persons and riggers. Brine extraction is not mining, so MSHA rules do not apply to these projects. More detail lives in our requirements guide.

Our course covers the knowledge side through exam-style practice questions. You still book the written exam with the certifying body, by online proctoring, at a test center or at an event, and complete a hands-on practical exam at an accredited site. From Magnolia, Shreveport is about an hour and a half west, and Little Rock is roughly two and a half hours north.

Questions people ask

Is Albemarle hiring certified crane operators?

We don't speak for Albemarle or its contractors. Expansion projects generally use contractors who require certified operators and qualified riggers, and the course prepares you for the exams those credentials need.

I run a knuckle-boom at a lumber yard. Which course fits?

The articulating crane operator course is built for loader and knuckle-boom work. If you also run a truck-mounted telescopic crane, look at the service truck crane course.

Does lithium brine work require MSHA training?

No. Brine production is regulated as oil-and-gas and industrial work, not mining. OSHA's crane rules are what apply.

Can I enroll a small crew from my shop?

Yes. Use the enrollment form and note how many people you want to enroll; an advisor will reply.
