Crane Exam Prep for Clay County, From Crowley's Ridge to the Black River
Clay County fills the northeast corner of Arkansas, with Missouri along two of its sides. It keeps two county seats, a leftover from the days when floods on the Black and Cache rivers could cut one half of the county off from the other: Piggott in the east, on the edge of Crowley's Ridge, and Corning in the west, where US 67 and US 62 split. Around them is flat Delta farmland. The lifting here is mostly agricultural and rural, with grain bins, farm shops and utility lines, plus plant work in Corning and a run of bridge and highway jobs. Our online courses let Clay County operators, riggers and signal persons prepare for accredited exams on their own schedule.
Two very different setups
Crowley's Ridge, a narrow band of higher ground built from wind-blown loess, runs through the county, and Piggott sits on its eastern edge. A job on the ridge may give you firmer, better-drained ground but also slopes and loess that erodes when it gets wet. In the lowlands around Corning and along the St. Francis River on the Missouri line, the ground is flat but often soft. An operator working both sides of the county in the same week has to read the ground differently each time.
Bridges, highways and a Corning plant
Several current projects in and around the county involve lifting. MoDOT and ARDOT are jointly replacing the US 62 bridge over the St. Francis River on the state line; MoDOT's project page scheduled the work from January 12 to December 1, 2026, with the route closed and detoured. In 2025 ARDOT ran weekday lane closures for structural repairs on the US 62 Black River bridge near Corning. ARDOT has also studied a Corning bypass for future Interstate 57, presented at a 2024 public meeting as a 4.1-mile new roadway built to interstate standards. Bridge beams, girders and form work all call for qualified riggers and signal persons alongside certified operators.
On the plant side, Five Rivers Manufacturing opened an expanded headquarters in Corning in August 2026, where it makes G&H Decoys and three other outdoor brands. The company had relocated G&H Decoys to Corning in 2024. Plant expansions bring equipment setting, racking and steel work, often done with boom trucks or a hired hydraulic crane.
Grain storage and farm construction
Row-crop farms need storage and drying, and bin erection is a crane job from the roof ring up. Boom trucks and small hydraulic cranes also set trusses for equipment sheds and shops. Big sheet panels in open country catch wind, so tag lines, a wind limit and a dedicated signal person are standard practice.

- Ground crew: Rigger Level 1 and signal person
- Electric co-op and line crews: digger derrick operator
Weather and water
Northeast Arkansas sees hot, humid summers, severe spring storms and winter ice that can coat wire rope and outrigger pads. The Black and Cache rivers flood in wet years, and drainage ditches crisscross the farmland, so check access routes after heavy rain before you send a loaded carrier down a field road.
Certification requirements
Arkansas does not issue a crane operator license. Federal OSHA, through the Little Rock Area Office, covers private employers. Under 29 CFR 1926.1427, construction crane operators need certification from an accredited organization and an employer evaluation; signal persons and riggers must be qualified under 1926.1428 and 1926.1425. Read our requirements guide for more.
Written exams can be taken by Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at a scheduled event, while practicals are hands-on at an accredited site arranged through the certifying body. Jonesboro is roughly an hour south, and Memphis and Little Rock are longer drives.
