Crane Certification Prep for Conway and Faulkner County Crews
Faulkner County grows fast for central Arkansas, and that growth shows up as cranes: steel on hospital and campus additions in Conway, precast panels for distribution space near I-40, and truck cranes setting trusses in new subdivisions toward Greenbrier and Vilonia. Conway is also home base for Nabholz, one of the larger construction firms in the region, so a lot of commercial work that starts here travels across the state. This page is for operators, riggers and signal persons in the county who want to prepare for a nationally accredited certification on their own schedule, using our self-paced online prep on a phone, tablet or laptop.
Who is lifting in Faulkner County
A 2023 list of Conway's largest employers put Conway Regional Health System first at about 1,650 workers, followed by the University of Central Arkansas and Acxiom. Those names matter to crane crews because hospitals and universities build in phases: a new patient tower, a parking deck, a residence hall, chillers and rooftop air handlers swapped out over a summer break. Each phase brings a hydraulic crane or a lattice boom machine onto a tight, occupied site where pedestrian control and a clear signal plan count as much as the load chart.
Construction itself is a big employer here. Arkansas Business figures put the industry at roughly 4,400 jobs in the county, fifth among sectors. Nabholz, headquartered in Conway, appeared on the 2023 list with about 550 employees, and smaller general contractors and steel erectors fill in around it. Many of those crews hold an NCCCO card already and need recertification every five years; others are laborers moving up to rigging or the seat.
Housing, roads and the I-40 corridor
Metroplan's 2025 economic review reported single-family construction in the Little Rock region up about 29 percent year over year and named Conway among the cities carrying most of the multi-family work. Practically, that means boom trucks and small telescopic cranes running between lumberyards and job sites all week, setting roof trusses, wall panels and HVAC units. A 2026 local update noted permits leveling off slightly after several years of rapid building, so steady remodel and commercial work is filling more of the calendar.
Interstate 40 cuts through Conway and Mayflower on its way to Little Rock, and highway widening, interchange and bridge work along it draws crane time from road contractors. Lake Conway on the south side and the Arkansas River along the county's southwestern edge put some projects near water, where soft ground and outrigger mats deserve extra attention.
Matching a credential to the work
- Residential truss and panel setting: service truck crane or articulating crane prep, depending on the machine
- Commercial steel, hospital and campus lifts: mobile crane operator for the TSS, TLL or LAT specialty you run
- Ground crew on multi-crane sites: rigger level 1 and signal person
- Card expiring in the next year: mobile crane recertification
Weather that changes lift plans
Central Arkansas spring brings fast-moving lines of thunderstorms and tornado warnings, and Faulkner County has been hit before. Gusts arrive ahead of a storm line well before rain does, so crews here get used to checking wind speed at boom tip height and calling a stop early. Summer heat index readings above 100 degrees slow riggers down and affect hydraulic oil temperature, while winter ice storms can glaze outrigger pads and access roads overnight.
How certification works from Conway
Arkansas does not license crane operators at the state level, and we found no Conway city license either. Private construction employers fall under federal OSHA, handled through the Little Rock Area Office, and 29 CFR 1926.1427 requires operators to be certified by an accredited testing organization and evaluated by their employer. Our Arkansas requirements guide lays out how that fits together, including signal person and rigger qualification.
Written exams can be taken by Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at a scheduled event. The practical is a separate hands-on test at an accredited practical site arranged through the certifying body. Being 30 minutes from Little Rock gives Faulkner County candidates more scheduling options than most of the state.
Questions people ask
Do Greenbrier, Vilonia and Mayflower crews use this page too?
Yes. It covers every town in Faulkner County, including Conway, Greenbrier, Vilonia, Mayflower, Guy and Damascus.
I set trusses with a boom truck for a home builder. Do I need certification?
Under federal Subpart CC, most boom truck work in construction requires a certified operator, with limited exceptions for certain material delivery. If your machine is rated over 2,000 pounds and you hoist materials into place on site, plan on certification. Your employer makes the final call on how the rule applies to its work.
Can a whole crew from one contractor enroll together?
Yes. Use the enrollment form to tell us how many people and which credentials, and an enrollment advisor will reply about setting up crew enrollment.
Is there a Faulkner County or Conway crane license?
We have not found one. National certification under the federal standard is what employers and general contractors ask for here.
