Conway County Crane Certification for Morrilton Plants and Sites

Conway County, not to be confused with the city of Conway one county over, centers on Morrilton along I-40 and the Arkansas River, with Petit Jean Mountain rising to the southwest. Manufacturing is the main source of crane work: Green Bay Packaging, Petit Jean Meats, machine shops and fabricators, plus a certified industrial site on the edge of town that is being marketed for new plants. Use this page to plan your path to an accredited crane certification, with online study you can do on your own schedule.

Plants and fabricators around Morrilton

Green Bay Packaging has long been one of the county's largest employers, and paper and packaging mills are equipment-heavy places: rolls, dryers, boilers and conveyors all need cranes during outages. Petit Jean Meats has processed pork in Morrilton since the 1920s. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas also lists G & M Tool & Machine, Lanco Industries and Sound-Craft Systems among the town's major employers. Shops and plants like these use overhead cranes daily and bring in mobile cranes for installs and roof work.

A billion-dollar rebuild at the paper mill

In June 2025 Green Bay Packaging broke ground on Project PowerPack, an investment of more than $1 billion at its Morrilton mill that the state described as the largest capital investment in Central Arkansas history. The multiyear plan replaces the recovery boiler and the biomass boiler, adds an electric turbine generator and could more than double the mill's capacity. The company, already employing more than 620 people in the county, said it would add 35 jobs and buy about 300 acres for future growth. Highway 113 was relocated in 2024 to make room.

A recovery boiler is among the largest structures in a kraft mill, going up in sections over many months. Jobs like this keep big crawler and hydraulic cranes on site for a long time and call for heavy rigging around a mill that keeps running. It is the clearest local case for learning load charts thoroughly and moving up to Rigger Level 2.

The South Site and future construction

The Conway County Economic Development Corporation owns the 40-acre Morrilton Industrial Park South Site, part of a 123-acre park near I-40 also called the May Hope Moose Industrial Park. In February 2026 it earned Entergy Arkansas's Select Site certification, which documents utilities, environmental conditions and infrastructure for fast-moving projects. The site is about 0.7 miles from Union Pacific rail and 1.8 miles from the Arkansas River, with the Port of Dardanelle and the Port of Little Rock each within about 35 miles. A local report described 2025 as a year of historic investment in manufacturing, education and infrastructure in the county. If a new plant lands on the site, its steel, tilt-up and equipment setting will all need certified crane crews.

River, mountain and weather

Bottomland along the Arkansas River is soft and floods in wet years, while Petit Jean Mountain and the Ozark foothills north of I-40 bring rock, grades and narrow roads. Spring storms with high winds and tornado warnings, summer heat, and occasional ice storms all show up in lift planning here.

Certification basics

No Arkansas state or Morrilton city crane license exists that we could find. Private employers fall under federal OSHA through its Little Rock Area Office, and construction cranes are covered by Subpart CC. Read the Arkansas requirements guide for operator, rigger and signal person details.

Written exams are offered by online proctoring, at test centers and at events, and the practical is arranged with the certifying body at an accredited site. Little Rock is about 45 minutes east on I-40.

Questions people ask

Is this the page for the city of Conway?

No. The city of Conway is in Faulkner County; see our Conway page. This page covers Conway County: Morrilton, Plumerville, Oppelo, Menifee and nearby towns.

Do plant maintenance lifts need certification?

Construction work needs certified operators under Subpart CC. Some maintenance falls under general industry rules instead, though many plants require certification anyway. Your employer makes that call.

Will the paper mill expansion hire local crane operators?

We have no say in that; hiring is up to Green Bay Packaging and its contractors. Operators running cranes on that kind of construction will need accredited certification under the federal rule.

Can our plant enroll several maintenance workers?

Yes. Send the enrollment form with your numbers, and an enrollment advisor will reply about crew enrollment.
