Lawrence County Crane and Rigging Certification Prep
Lawrence County straddles the Black River, which splits it into two landscapes: flat Delta bottomland on the east side around Walnut Ridge and Hoxie, and hilly Ozark foothills to the west. The Strawberry and Spring rivers also cross the county. A wartime airfield turned public airport, an industrial base along the new I-57 corridor and farm construction keep cranes and boom trucks busy. Operators and riggers here can prepare for national certification online, then sit the written and practical exams through the certifying body.
An industrial base on a WWII airfield
Construction of the Walnut Ridge Army Air Field began in June 1942 on more than 3,000 acres northeast of town, and the flying school graduated over 4,600 pilots before the Navy took the field over in 1944. It has been a public airport since 1948 and today has three runways, the longest just over 6,000 feet. Manufacturers have occupied buildings on and around the old field, and the city's industrial park sits close to the US 67 corridor, which local leaders have long pitched to employers.
That corridor is now Interstate 57: in 2024 the 100-plus-mile stretch of US 67 from North Little Rock to Walnut Ridge was redesignated I-57. Industrial work in town means setting rooftop units, moving presses and installing overhead equipment, the kind of lifts where a certified operator and a qualified rigger are expected on site.
Plant growth across northeast Arkansas
Business press in 2016 and 2017 credited Peco Foods, Allegis Corp. and American Silica with an economic boom in this corner of the state, while warning that housing was not keeping up. American Silica's $48 million frac sand plant was reported in 2016 as opening just outside Walnut Ridge, and Walnut Ridge plastics maker Custom-Pak was weighing an expansion in 2017. Peco's large poultry processing plant is next door in Pocahontas, in Randolph County, and draws workers from Lawrence County.
More recently, Americo Vinyl & Fabric, an industrial textile maker displaced by the West Memphis data center project, announced in December 2025 that it was moving into an existing building in Walnut Ridge, citing the I-57 location. Every move-in or new line like these brings structural steel, equipment setting and rigging. Contractors will want proof of certification before you touch the controls; that is a federal requirement, not a local one.
Rice country lifts
- Grain bin rings and roof sections stacked with boom trucks
- Dryer towers and conveyor legs that need a planned rigging path
- Irrigation pumps and well equipment set with service trucks
- Soft, saturated field ground in spring that calls for mats and cribbing
Courses that fit Lawrence County work
Start with mobile crane operator if you run a telescopic hydraulic crane, or service truck crane operator if your crane rides on a mechanic's body. Plant maintenance staff and ironworkers often add Rigger Level 2 and signal person. Jonesboro is about half an hour away and Memphis is roughly a two-hour drive, which matters when you plan travel for a practical exam.
