Clark County Crane Certification Prep Along I-30
Clark County sits where the hilly north gives way to the rolling, pine-covered south, with I-30 running diagonally through it. Arkadelphia, the seat, lies on the west bank of the Ouachita River and is home to two universities, Ouachita Baptist (founded 1886) and Henderson State (1890), while DeGray Lake and Arkansas' only resort state park sit in the northern part of the county. That mix brings campus construction, highway and bridge work along the interstate, lakeside building and timber mill jobs around Gurdon. Our self-paced courses let operators, riggers and signal persons in the county prepare for accredited exams online.
Campus building in Arkadelphia
Two universities in one small city mean regular construction: residence halls, academic buildings, athletics facilities and the mechanical upgrades that go with them. Campus sites are busy, with students walking past the barricades and tight laydown areas between existing buildings. Operators need to know how to work within a defined swing area, and the crew needs a signal person who can manage blind picks over rooftops. We don't speak for either university; we prepare people for the certification exams.
A town that rebuilt
On March 1, 1997, an F4 tornado struck Arkadelphia in mid-afternoon, destroying much of downtown and severely damaging some sixty blocks of the city; the Clark County Courthouse lost its capstone. The city drew up a plan to rebuild, and the recovery took years. Storm cleanup and rebuilding are crane-intensive: damaged structures come down, debris has to be lifted safely, and new buildings go up quickly. The lesson for crews today is to treat the spring storm season seriously, with a clear plan for securing the crane when a warning is issued.
Timber mills around Gurdon
Pine timber is the industrial base of south Clark County. Georgia-Pacific's Gurdon plywood and lumber operations finished a roughly $40 million lumber mill expansion in 2016, with a continuous dry kiln and a new planer mill, and the company announced in 2019 it would invest up to $70 million more to upgrade the plywood and lumber operations, which it said supported more than 700 local jobs. In 2023 the county's economic development corporation awarded an incentive to McKenzie Farms Excavating and Trucking for a Gurdon expansion adding pallet and wood post manufacturing.
Mill upgrades mean kiln sections, saw lines, conveyors and motors set into existing buildings, often around shutdown schedules. Maintenance crews who rig that equipment benefit from formal rigging and signaling training as much as the crane operator does.
Interstate, river and lake work
- I-30 bridges and interchanges call for girder picks and lifts next to traffic: Rigger Level 2 helps with lift planning
- The Caddo River leaves DeGray Lake and joins the Ouachita just north of Arkadelphia near Caddo Valley, where I-30, US 67 and Highway 7 meet; work near water means soft banks and careful outrigger placement
- Lakeside homes and marinas at DeGray mean sloped setups on rocky ground: mobile crane operator
- Utility crews setting poles across the hills: digger derrick operator
Rules, testing and distance
There is no Arkansas crane operator license. Private employers fall under federal OSHA through the Little Rock Area Office, and 29 CFR 1926.1427 requires construction crane operators to be certified by an accredited organization and evaluated by their employer. Riggers and signal persons must be qualified. The Arkansas Department of Labor and Licensing also offers free, confidential safety consultation for private employers. Details are in our requirements guide.
The written exam can be taken by Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at an event. Practical exams are hands-on at an accredited site arranged through the certifying body. Little Rock is about 65 miles up I-30, and Texarkana is a little farther the other way.
