Crane and Rigger Exam Prep for Pike County

Pike County is best known for the Crater of Diamonds State Park two miles southeast of Murfreesboro, but the land around it is mostly forest, foothills and water. Narrows Dam holds back Lake Greeson on the Little Missouri River, and pine plantations cover much of the countryside. For the operators and riggers who work timber, utilities and local building here, online prep is a practical way to get ready for national written exams without long trips for class.

A county built on timber and water

Logging drove Pike County's early growth, and by the 1920s most of the original forest had been cut. Today's pine plantations are harvested on long rotations, so loaders, knuckleboom trucks and occasional sawmill equipment moves are the core lifting work. The county school district and the state park are among the larger local employers, along with small manufacturers.

Construction on Narrows Dam began in 1948 and finished in 1951. Lake Greeson now draws boaters and anglers, and lake homes, docks and marina work bring small-crane jobs on steep, rocky shorelines. Some abandoned mercury mines from the 1930s and 1940s are still visible around the lake.

Narrows Dam repairs and the Glenwood sawmill

Narrows Dam was authorized in the Flood Control Act of 1941 for flood control and hydropower, and its powerhouse holds three generating units; the third was added in 1969. In December 2023 the Corps of Engineers' Vicksburg District stopped generation after divers found the trash racks, the steel grates that keep debris out of the turbines, were deteriorating. The fix involved floating work platforms, divers removing the old structure and fabrication of a new support frame, with Lake Greeson drawn down to about 538 feet.

Water work like that is a specialty of its own: equipment on floats, loads lowered to divers who can't see the operator, and signals passed by radio. On the north side of the county, the Glenwood sawmill that Georgia-Pacific built and a later owner closed in 2008 reopened in 2017 as Caddo River Forest Products, a planned $50 million project. A federal EDA grant of $817,726 went to the city of Glenwood for water and road work to serve it. Mill rebuilds and the maintenance that follows keep cranes on kilns, planers and log decks.

Setting up on foothill ground

Southwest Arkansas foothills mix red clay with rock outcrops. Clay turns slick after storms and loses bearing, while rock makes it hard to get a crane level. Load charts assume level, firm support, and the written exams test whether you know what happens when you don't have it. Spring storms and summer heat are the other two things to plan around.

Distance shapes careers here as well. Murfreesboro is a back-roads drive from Interstate 30, and Little Rock and Texarkana are the nearest larger cities with steady construction. Many Pike County operators spend weeks on out-of-county jobs, which is one reason a portable national credential beats any local card.

Certification without a state license

Arkansas doesn't license crane operators. On construction jobs, federal Subpart CC requires accredited operator certification plus employer evaluation, and qualified riggers and signal persons. Exams go through the certifying body: written tests online-proctored, at a test center or at an event, and a hands-on practical at an accredited site. Read more in the Arkansas requirements guide.

Questions people ask

Is the diamond park a mine under MSHA?

Crater of Diamonds is a state park where visitors search for stones, not a commercial mine. Diamonds there were never found in enough quantity to support steady mining.

I run a knuckleboom on a lumber truck. Which course fits?

The articulating crane operator course is built for that type of crane.

Do line crews running digger derricks need certification?

Federal rules treat some digger derrick work on electric and telecom poles differently from other crane work. Ask your employer what your tasks require. The digger derrick operator course covers that equipment either way.

How long does it take?

It's self-paced, so it depends on how much time you put in each week.

Does a crane on a barge or float follow different rules?

Yes. Federal rule 1926.1437 covers floating cranes and land cranes set on barges, including load chart adjustments for list and trim. Start with the mobile crane operator course, and add signal person prep if you run radio signals to a blind operator.
