Poinsett County Crane Prep for Fabrication and Farm Crews

Poinsett County lies between Jonesboro and the steel mills of Mississippi County, and its industry reflects both. Trumann, the largest city, grew up as a manufacturing town, and machinery and transportation equipment plants are among the county's top manufacturing employers. Steel fabricators have started to arrive along Interstate 555. Crane operators and riggers here can prepare for national exams online, from Harrisburg's spot on Crowley's Ridge to the flat Delta fields around Marked Tree.

Steel coming to Marked Tree

In late 2025, Texas steel fabricator Basden Steel announced its first Arkansas plant just off Exit 13 on I-555 in Marked Tree, expected to employ up to 30 people. Part of the draw was being close to the Mississippi County mills that supply its steel. A fabrication shop lives on overhead cranes and on mobile cranes to load out finished members, and building it will need erection crews.

Earlier, Rage Fabrications, a maker of ATV and UTV accessories, opened in Trumann with Delta Regional Authority grant help, hiring for welding and cutting work.

Where the other lifts happen

County industry data shows agriculture and construction employing more people than any single manufacturing sector, so plant jobs are only part of the picture.

  • Machinery and transportation equipment plants that need presses and lines set or moved
  • Grain bins, dryers and farm shop buildings across the Delta fields
  • Utility poles and substation work on long, straight farm roads
  • Home and commercial building in Trumann, a short drive from Jonesboro

Highway, trail and drainage work

The state has long planned to widen Highway 69, the road tying Trumann to I-555. A 2019 public meeting introduced the project, and 2022 plans added a lane, curb and gutter and sidewalks and filled the roadside ditches. A November 2024 bid notice covered resurfacing about 13.4 miles of Highway 14 near Harrisburg, due by November 26, 2025, and a January 2026 notice covered about 3.9 miles of Highway 1. In September 2025, Trumann began phase one of the Sunken Lands Trail with an ARDOT grant, running from the Steel Creek property to Highway 69.

Ditch fills and widenings bring storm drain pipe, box culverts and junction boxes, usually set by a hydraulic crane or boom truck working beside traffic. Basden Steel's planned Marked Tree site sits on about 70 acres along I-555 and Highway 149, so that project will add its own site work once it starts.

Delta ground and Crowley's Ridge

Most of Poinsett County is flat bottomland that holds water. Saturated silt and clay can let an outrigger sink, which is why ground bearing and matting show up so often on written exams. Harrisburg sits higher on Crowley's Ridge, where the soil is loess and drains better but slopes are steeper. Spring storms and the region's location near the New Madrid seismic zone are part of local planning too.

Licensing and the exams

There is no Arkansas crane license. Federal OSHA's Subpart CC requires accredited operator certification and an employer evaluation, and it sets qualification rules for riggers and signal persons. The written test can be taken by Online Proctored Testing; the practical is hands-on at an accredited site, and Jonesboro and Memphis are the closest metro areas to plan travel around. See the Arkansas requirements guide.

Questions people ask

I'm a welder who sometimes runs the shop's mobile crane. Do I need certification?

Overhead cranes in a shop fall under a different OSHA standard, but mobile crane work on construction is covered by Subpart CC. Ask your employer which applies; the mobile crane operator course is the usual starting point.

Can our plant enroll several riggers at once?

Yes. Crew enrollment is available through the get started form.

Does online prep include the hands-on test?

No. The practical exam is taken in person through the certifying body.

My card is close to expiring. What now?

Certifications renew every five years. The mobile crane recertification course covers the written review, and operators with 1,000 hours of crane-related experience can often skip the practical retest.

Do road crews setting box culverts need a certified operator?

If a crane or boom truck over 2,000 pounds rated capacity is hoisting the culvert on a construction job, Subpart CC applies and the operator needs accredited certification plus an employer evaluation. The mobile crane operator course is the usual starting point.
