Saline County Crane Training for the I-30 Growth Corridor

Saline County used to be known for bauxite. During World War II its mines supplied most of the country's aluminum ore. Today it is one of the fastest-growing parts of central Arkansas, with Benton and Bryant stretching along I-30 toward Little Rock. That growth means highway interchanges, retail pads, medical buildings, schools, subdivisions and utility upgrades, and each needs lifts done by people who can show accredited certification. If you work out of Benton, Bryant, Alexander, Haskell or the lake communities to the west, this page explains how to prepare.

Lessons from the I-30 widening

ARDOT's Connecting Arkansas job CA0601 widened 5.5 miles of I-30 to three lanes in each direction, from the US 70 interchange (Exit 111) to Sevier Street in Benton (Exit 116), and rebuilt the Highway 67 interchange at Exit 114. Johnson Brothers Corporation won the contract at $187.3 million, and the program reported the job substantially complete in January 2025, with some overnight lane closures continuing that spring. Separate rehabilitation projects covered the interstate between mile markers 100 and 110.

Interstate work like this is where many Saline County operators first ran bigger cranes: setting bridge girders over live traffic, placing precast walls and handling falsework. ARDOT has also listed another I-30 overpass job in Benton for future letting, so highway lifting is likely to continue, though schedules change and should be checked.

Hospitals, schools and the commercial build-out

Data USA puts health care and social assistance as the county's largest employment sector in 2024, at roughly 10,600 workers. Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton began as a county-owned hospital in the mid-1950s and had grown to around 400,000 square feet and 177 beds by 2017. Medical campuses keep adding clinics, parking structures and mechanical equipment, all jobs that need cranes.

Population growth pushes schools, churches, retail centers and apartment complexes along the Bryant and Benton exits. Those projects lean on truck cranes and smaller telescopic hydraulics for steel, trusses, tilt-up panels and rooftop HVAC units. Operators who can also rig and signal tend to stay busier on these short-duration jobs.

Where bauxite history meets today's sites

Alcoa's predecessor bought land here in 1905, and the company town of Bauxite was home to miners until Alcoa phased it out in 1969. Reynolds left the state's bauxite business in 1981. Old pits, reclaimed ground and fill around the former mining district are a reminder to take ground conditions seriously: check what is under your outriggers, request soil information when it is available, and use mats sized for the load.

Active mines and quarries fall under MSHA rather than OSHA's construction crane rule, so if you work at an extraction site, confirm which agency and training requirements apply before you start.

Getting certified from Benton or Bryant

Arkansas does not issue a state crane license, and private-sector sites fall under federal OSHA through the Little Rock Area Office. Subpart CC requires operator certification from an accredited body and an employer evaluation, plus qualified riggers and signal persons. Our Arkansas requirements guide explains each part.

You can study with us on any device, at any hour, with practice questions built around the exam outlines. The NCCCO written tests can be taken by Online Proctored Testing, at a test center or at a scheduled event; the practical is always hands-on, at an accredited test site arranged through the certifying body. Most of the county is within half an hour of Little Rock, which makes it easier to reach practical events when they are listed in central Arkansas.

Central Arkansas weather swings hard. Expect spring severe storms, summer heat over 90 degrees for weeks, and the occasional winter ice storm that coats booms and rigging. Plan lifts and inspections around all three.

Questions people ask

Does Benton or Bryant license crane operators?

We found no city crane license. The federal OSHA standard applies, so operators need accredited certification and their employer's evaluation.

I already work highway jobs as a rigger. Which course fits?

Rigger Level 1 covers the core rigging knowledge. If you plan or lead heavier picks, look at Rigger Level 2.

Can online study replace the practical exam?

No. Online prep gets you ready for the written exam and helps with load chart and signal knowledge, but the practical is a hands-on test you take through the certifying body.
