St. Francis County Crane Certification Study

Forrest City grew on rail and highway links toward Memphis, and the completion of Interstate 40 brought more industry to town. Today St. Francis County mixes Delta row crops with light manufacturing, and it hosts one of the larger federal prison complexes in the region. Operators and riggers in Forrest City and the surrounding towns can prepare for national crane certification exams online, without fitting a class into their week.

An industrial town on the interstate

The Encyclopedia of Arkansas credits Forrest City Machine Works as one of the first industries after World War II, with the state's industrial development push and later I-40 drawing more plants. The Arkansas Association of Counties describes a county that has shifted from rural agriculture toward light manufacturing. Mueller Copper Tube Products appears on a regional list of local employers.

Plant work means rigging presses, furnaces and production lines, and setting rooftop equipment with a hired crane. Along I-40, overpass, sign structure and truck stop construction bring highway lifts with live traffic nearby.

Road work keeps coming back to the interstate. A bid listing published in November 2025 described milling and overlaying a little over 30 miles of I-40 across Monroe and St. Francis counties, with modification of an existing bridge structure in the scope.

Lunch meat, heaters and an empty TV plant

A 2018 trade profile of Forrest City put Boar's Head at about 600 employees, roughly the same as the federal prison complex, alongside several smaller manufacturers and shovel-ready sites in the industrial park beside the interstate. Airtherm, a maker of heating equipment and a division of Mestek since 2000, moved its manufacturing to a larger Forrest City plant in 1963. The 161-acre former Sanyo television plant, idle since late 2007, was the subject of a 2017 announcement by Shandong Ruyi of a $410 million textile conversion and up to 800 jobs; we could not confirm what came of it.

Food plants are a particular kind of rigging job. Refrigeration, conveyors and processing equipment get replaced in short planned shutdowns, floors and product areas have to be protected, and loads often go in through a roof opening or a narrow door around wash-down schedules. The load weight and center-of-gravity work in Rigger Level 2 fits that setting well.

The federal correctional complex

The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates FCC Forrest City, with a minimum-security camp and low- and medium-security institutions. The low-security institution opened in 1997. Large secure campuses need ongoing maintenance: HVAC replacements, generator sets and building repairs often call for a crane, and contractors working inside security perimeters plan every lift in detail.

Crowley's Ridge meets the Delta

Forrest City sits on Crowley's Ridge, a narrow band of higher ground that rises out of the flat farmland. The loess soils on the ridge erode on slopes, while the Delta fields on either side hold water after rain. Grain bins, cotton gins and equipment shops in the flatlands are steady sources of boom truck work.

Heat and humidity in summer, spring tornadoes and occasional ice storms shape scheduling. All of it maps to topics on the written exams: ground conditions, wind and the effect of weather on rated capacity.

Certification in plain terms

Arkansas does not license crane operators. On construction work, federal OSHA's Subpart CC requires an accredited certification and an employer evaluation, plus qualified riggers and signal persons. Written exams can be taken online with a remote proctor; the practical has to be done in person. Memphis is under an hour east and Little Rock about an hour and a half west, the two metros to check for practical events. Our Arkansas requirements guide has the full picture.

Questions people ask

I do HVAC work and set units with a boom truck. Which course fits?

For truck-mounted cranes, start with the service truck crane operator course. Larger units on taller roofs may call for the mobile crane operator course.

Does a CDL count as crane certification?

No. A CDL covers driving. Operating a crane on construction work requires a separate accredited certification.

Is installing a new line in a food plant considered construction?

Usually, yes: new lines and building additions are generally treated as construction, while routine upkeep may fall under general industry rules. The plant and your employer make the call, and many food plants want certified operators on site regardless.

How long should I plan to study?

That depends on your experience and how often you can sit down with it. The course is self-paced, so you can move quickly through topics you know and spend longer on load charts or rigging math.

Do you guarantee I'll pass?

No one can promise that. The course gives you exam-style practice questions so you can find your weak spots before test day.
